I grew up in Portsmouth, Ohio, a small city at the mouth of the Scioto and Ohio Rivers. Living along a river taught me much about rivers flooding, deaths, and the cruel realities of nature. “Going to town” was the Saturday event. I bridged city life with time in the country, 4-H membership, and hauling hay. I graduated from Portsmouth High School, sitting where my father sat some 67 years earlier. I graduated from Miami of Ohio with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Teaching experiences took me first to Athens, Greece and then to Mt. Prospect, Illinois. I was married and we moved to Quantico, Virginia. I taught on the marine base while beginning my Master’s Degree from the University of Virginia. We moved back to Portsmouth, I finished a Master’s Degree in Education from Ohio University, and began teaching at Shawnee State University. I completed my Ph.D. in Education from Ohio University. In 1989, I began teaching at the Southern Campus. I have been active on the campus serving on numerous committees, a Faculty Senator, and now a member of the Appalachian Learning Community. My research focuses on service learning pedagogy in preparing pre-service teachers.
