Captain Wayne "Mike" Straw - Operations Flight Commander

Captain Straw is the Operations Flight Commander, AFROTC Detachment 650, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.

Captain Straw was born in Tucson, Arizona, but was raised as an “Air Force Brat.” He enlisted in the Air Force in 1988 as a Communications and Computer Systems Operator. His enlisted assignments included Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico, Maxwell Air Force Base - Gunter Annex, Alabama, RAF Molesworth, England, and San Antonio, Texas. In 2003, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, and then earned a commission in 2004 after attending Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.

After commissioning, Capt Straw was assigned to the 55th Mission Support Squadron as the Squadron Section Commander. In April 2006, he was reassigned as the Squadron Adjutant for the 1st Airborne Command Control Squadron, where he led the personnel, manpower, and financial programs for the aircrew operating the E-4B, National Airborne Operations Center. He then moved to the 97th Intelligence Squadron in January 2007, where he served as Squadron Section Commander for the largest flying squadron in the Air Force. In December of that year, he was brought back to the 55th Mission Support Squadron to help lead the merging of the squadron with the 55th Services Squadron and became the Officer in Charge of Readiness for the newly established 55th Force Support Squadron in November 2008. He then deployed in December to Joint Base Balad in Iraq where he served as the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator for the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing. Upon his return in April 2009, he served as Executive Officer to the Commander, 55th Mission Support Group.

In July 2010, Capt Straw accepted an assignment to become an Assistant professor of Aerospace Studies and Recruiting Flight Commander for AFROTC Detachment 650 at the University of Ohio in Athens, Ohio, where he currently serves. He completed his work on his Masters in Business Administration from Touro University International that same month.
