Life As a First Year Cadet

As a 100 (a first year cadet) you will be introduced to the Air Force way of life. This introduction is very slow at first but as the year progresses you will be expected to learn more information and acquire new leadership skills that will start you on your way to becoming an Officer in the United States Air Force. Your 100 year will consist of Leadership Laboratory and Physical Training along with a flight meeting once a week. Your flight commander (a junior or senior) will then find a time during the week when all the cadets in your flight (9-12 other freshmen) will meet and discuss warrior knowledge, uniform wear, and activities going on in the wing. Listed below is a potential schedule you might see as a 100:

Monday
-2000-2100 Flight Meeting (date/time may vary by flight commander)

Tuesday
-0600-0700 Physical Training

Wednesday
-0600-0700 Drill and Ceremonies (learning to march)

-1310-1500 Leadership Laboratory (Uniform Day)

Thursday
-0600-0700 Physical Training

Friday
-0900-1100 Alternate Leadership Laboratory

-1510-1610 Physical Training

-1610-1800 Optional Ultimate Football (a good time)

*All times are listed in military time (a 24 hr clock). Converting to a 12hr clock is as follows: AM times are as they read; i.e. 0600 = 6:00AM, 1000 = 10:00AM. PM times have 12 added (military time – 12 = PM); i.e. 1300 = 1:00 PM, 2000 = 8:00PM. These schedules are not set in stone at any detachment. Schedules are often arranged to meet the time needs of cadet classes. If time conflicts do occur, AFROTC works with its Cadets to resolve the issue.

The Big Change

Transitioning from high school to college is a big step.  The course loads, out of class work, and available distractions dramatically increase with this transition.  This is why AFROTC works very closely with its cadets to smooth the transfer from high school to college student.  In many cases new students get caught up in the fast pace of college life and find themselves behind in their classes, and not performing to their full potential.  AFROTC gives new students guidance in handling their course loads while emphasizing personal discipline and teaching time management.  If a cadet begins to struggle the Cadre and Cadets will do everything in their power to assist you in getting back on track; meaning if you are having trouble in a class they will find you a tutor, or if your schedule becomes overwhelming they will work with you to sort it out. Remember, once you join AFROTC you are part of the family.  At any given time you have at least 30 big brothers and sisters looking out for you, ready and willing to help you out with any situation you may find yourself in.

After the First Year

After completing your 100 (freshmen) year, you go on to be a 200, 300, and 400 (sophomore, junior, and senior respectively) cadet. The 200 year focuses on sharpening your knowledge of the basics and preparing you to attend Field Training, which is essentially boot camp for future officers that tests and trains you as a future leader.  After completing Field Training you become a 300.  300’s and 400’s are the leadership within the detachment that run our Cadet Wing.  It is as a 300 and 400 that you are put in charge of planning, supervising, and running the wing activities such as physical training, leadership lab, public affairs, recruiting, computer operations, and much more.
