Opportunities for Research and Advanced Studies

Many of our undergraduate students value scholarly research as much as their distinguished faculty. From engineering to public health, to business and the arts, talented students actively explore their interests and seek ways to improve the world. Below are just some of the opportunities and resources awaiting you at Ohio University:

Provost's Undergraduate Research Fund
This program provides annual grants of up to $1,500 each to support the research and scholarly work of undergraduate students. The fund is administered through the office of the assistant dean in the Honors Tutorial College.

Departmental Honors
Outstanding undergraduate students who are not enrolled in the Honors Tutorial College often choose to earn departmental honors in their major. Students are expected to complete a thesis or project under the direction of a departmental supervisor. These honors projects often involve a high level of scholarly research. Academic departments determine the eligibilty of the students as well as guidelines for program completion. Interested students should contact the appropriate academic college for further details.

Dean's Undergraduate Creative Research Award
Students in the College of Fine Arts can submit a proposal to research an endeavor of their choosing. Awards range up to $1,000.

Independent Research
Some ambitious students seek out one-on-one resarch opportunities along Ohio University faculty. Interested students are encouraged to contact a specific professor or their academic department chair.

Graduate-level Coursework
Undergraduate students at Ohio University who are interested in pursuing advanced studies have three options for pursuing graduate-level courses:

  • Departmental honors students can take up to three graduate courses in their major. The classes count toward the bachelor's degree and students earn undergraduate credit.
  • Qualified seniors can take up to two graduate courses for graduate credit. These courses do not affect undergraduate hours earned, program requirements or undergraduate g.p.a.
  • Seniors who have completed all undergraduate requirements except "total hours earned" may even qualify for early admission to a graduate program.
