The college is comprised of four academic units: the School of Applied Health Science and Wellness, the School of Rehabilitation and Communication Sciences, the School of Nursing, and the Department of Social and Public Health. Many of the college's programs are accredited by their respective agencies and some are recognized as leaders nationwide.
Health Sciences and Professions students make a difference on campus and in the surrounding community while gaining experience by working for on-campus clinics and recreation facilities and in community outreach programs. The college operates several experiential facilities, including a hearing, speech, language and physical therapy clinic; the Atrium Café; WellWorks—the University’s employee wellness program; and Kids on Campus—an after school and summer program for Athens County children. All of these facilities serve a dual purpose: to provide public services to the community and campus while providing educational opportunities for our students. In many cases, students can receive academic internship credit for applying what they learn while working in these facilities.
All of the college’s facilities, both experiential and classroom, are state-of-the-art. Most of the classes within the college majors are held in Grover Center, which opened in 2001 and includes technology in every classroom for instructor and student use.
Our Distinctions
The industrial hygiene (IH) program is one of only five accredited undergraduate IH programs in the country. The communication sciences and disorders program is one of the oldest academic programs of it's kind in the world and one of the very first university clinics. The college introduced the first graduate level sports administration program in the country more than 25 years ago--still considered one of the best in the world--and today the undergraduate sport industry program benefits from the strong connections with the alumni of that premier program. Many of those alumni hold leadership positions in professional sports and entertainment.
Degrees
Upon completion of a program of study within the college, you will be awarded the appropriate Bachelor of Science or Associate degree. Bachelor's degrees are awarded in the following areas: athletic training; environmental health; health; hearing, speech and language sciences; industrial hygiene; and nursing. Masters and doctoral level programs of study are available in select areas.
Special Admission Requirements
The following programs admit students as pre-majors and beginning students must meet certain criteria in order to be admitted directly into the major: Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology and Nursing. In addition, the Athletic Training program limits openings in the major.
Physical Therapy
The School of Physical Therapy offers an entry-level doctoral program in physical therapy leading to the Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) degree. Applicants must possess a baccalaureate degree, which may be in any discipline as long as the prerequisites are met. Pre-physical therapy programs that prepare students for graduate study are offered by the departments of Biological Sciences and Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the exercise physiology program offered by the School of Applied Health Sciences and Wellness in the College of Health Sciences and Professions.
