Our Reputation
Five schools and the WOUB Center for Public Media comprise the Scripps College of Communication. The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism is ranked among the top 10 nationally by the Associated Press Managing Editors Association. The J. Warren McClure School of Information and Telecommunication Systems and WOUB Center for Public Media is the first of its kind in Ohio and the second nationally to offer a bachelor's degree in this field. The School of Visual Communication has more Hearst Foundation Photojournalism Competition grand champions than any other school in the history of the Hearst program. The School of Media Arts and Studies is one of the largest broadcasting and electronic media programs in the United States, and national surveys have ranked it as one of the best in the country. The WOUB Center for Public Media operates five public radio stations, two public television stations, and one cable television station serving more than 60 counties. The School of Communication Studies is home to Ohio University's nationally award winning Speech and Debate Team and is represented annually by students, faculty and alumni at the National Communication Association Conference.
Degrees
Depending on your major, you can earn a Bachelor of Science in Communication (B.S.C.), a Bachelor of Science in Journalism (B.S.J.), or a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication (B.S.V.C.) degree.
Special Application Deadline
The completion deadline for freshman students applying to the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism or the School of Visual Communication is December 15. Your application, fee, test scores, and transcripts must all be received by Undergraduate Admissions by this date to be considered for admission to either of these programs. Please note that a separate application is not required for freshman applicants.
Freshman Admission Requirements
Admission to the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism is extremely competitive. To be considered for admission, you must be in the top 15 percent of your class and score at least 25 on the ACT or 1140 (Math + Verbal) on the SAT. A portfolio is not required for admission. To be considered for the School of Media Arts and Studies, you must be in the top 40 percent of your class and score at least 23 on the ACT or 1060 (Math + Verbal) on the SAT. Applicants to the School of Visual Communication should meet the university's general admissions requirements and complete an interview and portfolio review, scheduled in January by the School of Visual Communication.
Transfer Application Deadline
Transfer students must submit supplemental application materials for the the School of Communication Studies, School of Journalism, the School of Media Arts and Studies and the School of Visual Communication by March 1 for fall quarter.
