Football Receives First-Ever MAC Sportsmanship
Award
5/9/99
ATHENS,
Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference has announced that the
Ohio
University football
program has received the first annual MAC Sportsmanship
Award for Football. The award is given to the MAC team that
shows the most sportsmanship throughout its season in the
six mandated sports (football, volleyball, men's and women's
basketball, baseball, softball).
Each
team's sportsmanship is rated after every MAC competition by
MAC officials/referees/umpires on a scale of 1-5. The two
areas judged are on-field decorum and bench decorum.
The award
comes on the heels of the announcement by the NCAA that Ohio
ranked 10th in the nation in Division I-A football
graduation rates.
"It's
great to see that our kids are rewarded for showing
character and maturity on the playing field and on the
sideline," said Ohio Head Football Coach Jim Grobe. "Good
sportsmanship is one thing that is expected from every
player in our program and as a team, we realize that we
represent Ohio University every time we take the field. That
is why we strive to be on our very best behavior every game
day."
The
Detroit Rotary Club presents the award on behalf of the
Mid-American Conference. Next fall, an overall institutional
award will be given to the MAC school that is ranked the
highest in the six sports combined during the 1998-99
academic year. Western Michigan won the first annual
Sportsmanship Award for Volleyball.
