COMMUNITY OF CULTURES UNITES FOR INTERNATIONAL
WEEK

ATHENS,
Ohio -- "A Community of Cultures" is the theme for this
year's International Week that runs May 10 through 15 and
concludes with the International Street Fair. The
celebrations will feature guest speakers,arts and crafts,
dancing and music.
"International
Week is really a celebration of the cultures from around the
world," said Associate Director of International
Student and Faculty
Services
David Tilahun. "The event brings the community and
international students together to learn more about each
other's countries and cultures. There is something for
everyone."
The week's
events include:
- Keynote
speaker Walker Connor, a distinguished professor at
Middlebury College, will present "The Impact of
Ethnonational and Religious Identities upon World Affairs
in the 20th and 21st Centuries" at 8 p.m. May 10 in
Irvine Hall Auditorium.
- Phi
Beta Delta International Honors Society will host an
induction ceremony at 4:30 p.m. May 11 in the Elizabeth
Baker Room of the Baker Center.
- The
Native Peoples Awareness Coalition will sponsor a guest
lecture by author Ted Williams, a member of the False
Face Society. Williams, whose traditional name is Wa tai
ha h'yuk, which means "crossed over," will speak on "The
Law of Great Peace" at 7 p.m. May 11 in Irvine Hall
Auditorium.
- Musician
and composer Sakiho Eimoto from Nagoya, Japan, will play
the koto, a traditional Japanese string instrument played
with a pick, at 8 p.m. May 12 in the Music Recital
Hall.
- Lois
Whealey, president of the American Association of
University Women, will speak on "Sustainable Communities:
A Global View" at noon May 13 at the Baker Center, Room
124.
- The
International Street Fair on Court Street May 15, which
will feature international singing and dancing, drumming,
folk music and remarks by President Robert Glidden and
Athens Mayor Ric Abel. The street fair begins at 10 a.m.
and runs until 4 p.m.
