ATHENS, Ohio -- Leon Harris, co-anchor of CNN's "Early Edition," will be the keynote speaker at Ohio University's two undergraduate commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. June 12 in the Convocation Center. 3,600 Ohio University undergraduates will listen as he addresses Ohio University's 245th Commencement Exercises.

A 1983 graduate of Ohio University, Harris has twice won the Best Newscaster Award at the Annual CableAce Awards ceremonies. Before his early morning newscast assignment, Harris was co-anchor of "Prime News" and "The World Today" weekday evenings with Joie Chen.

Harris has covered major breaking news stories such as the Oklahoma City bombing in April 1995, the manhunt for fashion designer Gianni Versace's alleged murderer Andrew Cunanan in July 1997, and the Los Angeles riots.

"We are delighted that Leon Harris will be our speaker for both undergraduate commencement ceremonies this year," Ohio University President Robert Glidden said. "Leon has distinguished himself and his alma mater by his rapid rise in his profession. He will have interesting and timely reflections for our graduates and their family and friends."

Harris started his career as a video journalist for CNN in 1983. A year later, he joined the network's satellite department as an operator and coordinator, and was later promoted to assistant director. In that position, Harris oversaw and negotiated international and domestic satellite services used to cover news events, including the Persian Gulf War and the Bush and Reagan international trips and summits.

Harris, a native of Akron, graduated cum laude from Ohio University with a bachelor's degree in communications.

As in past years, the morning commencement will include the Colleges of Business, Communication, Fine Arts and Health and Human Services. The afternoon commencement will include the Honors Tutorial College, University College, and the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Education and Engineering and Technology.

Martin "Marty" Schwartz, professor of sociology and chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Ohio University, will give the graduate commencement address at 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, in the Convocation Center.

Schwartz has twice won the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award. He has edited numerous books and has contributed more than 60 articles to journals such as "Criminology," "Deviant Behavior," "Justice Quarterly," and "Women and Politics." Schwartz received the career research achievement award from the American Society of Criminology and graduate students voted to award him the 1997 Ohio University Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award.
