ATHENS,
Ohio -- Leon Harris, co-anchor of CNN's "Early Edition,"
will be the keynote speaker at Ohio University's two
undergraduate commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
June 12 in the Convocation Center.

Ohio University undergraduates will listen as he addresses
Ohio University's 245th Commencement Exercises.
A 1983
graduate of Ohio University, Harris has twice won the Best
Newscaster Award at the Annual CableAce Awards ceremonies.
Before his early morning newscast assignment, Harris was
co-anchor of "Prime News" and "The World Today" weekday
evenings with Joie Chen.
Harris has
covered major breaking news stories such as the Oklahoma
City bombing in April 1995, the manhunt for fashion designer
Gianni Versace's alleged murderer Andrew Cunanan in July
1997, and the Los Angeles riots.
"We are
delighted that Leon Harris will be our speaker for both
undergraduate commencement ceremonies this year," Ohio
University President
Robert Glidden said. "Leon has distinguished himself and his
alma mater by his rapid rise in his profession. He will have
interesting and timely reflections for our graduates and
their family and friends."
Harris
started his career as a video journalist for CNN in 1983. A
year later, he joined the network's satellite department as
an operator and coordinator, and was later promoted to
assistant director. In that position, Harris oversaw and
negotiated international and domestic satellite services
used to cover news events, including the Persian Gulf War
and the Bush and Reagan international trips and
summits.
Harris, a
native of Akron, graduated cum laude from Ohio University
with a bachelor's degree in communications.
As in past
years, the morning commencement will include the Colleges of
Business,
Communication,
Fine
Arts
and Health
and Human Services.
The afternoon commencement will include the Honors Tutorial
College, University
College,
and the Colleges of
Arts and Sciences,
Education
and Engineering
and Technology.
Martin
"Marty" Schwartz, professor of sociology and chair of the
Department of Sociology
and Anthropology
at Ohio University, will give the graduate commencement
address at 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, in the Convocation
Center.
Schwartz
has twice won the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding
Teacher Award. He has edited numerous books and has
contributed more than 60 articles to journals such as
"Criminology," "Deviant Behavior," "Justice Quarterly," and
"Women and Politics." Schwartz received the career research
achievement award from the American Society of Criminology
and graduate students voted to award him the 1997 Ohio
University Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award.
