ATHENS,
Ohio -- "Creating a Positive Aging Experience" will be the
subject of a workshop conducted by Marlene Blackford,
M.S.N., R.N., C., at Glenwood Retirement Center, 200
Timberline Drive, Marietta, Tuesday, Nov. 16. The workshop
will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration is at
8:30 a.m. The workshop fee is $40.
"This
program will provide opportunities for health-care
professionals to deal with the negative images associated
with aging and introduce new ways of promoting the positive
aspects," said Suzanne Croci, geriatric education
coordinator at Ohio University College of Osteopathic
Medicine (OU-COM). "There is a prevailing belief that the
elderly can't be physically active, that they need to sit
still and get their rest. The truth is that if they are more
active, they are less likely to die. All of this will be
incorporated into Tuesday's workshop, especially the idea of
acting and doing versus sitting and watching."
Blackford
will list myths of aging along with the normal changes of
aging; describe common problems of aging, such as confusion,
stroke and depression, along with basic management
techniques; discuss medications including key issues,
pharmacokinetics and management tips; differentiate the
coverage provided by Medicaid, Medicare and other
insurances; summarize types and methods of locating
community resources, define ethic and legal issues and
suggest guidelines for decision making; and discuss methods
of promoting positive aging experiences.
Blackford
is the president of Autumn Enterprises. Blackford has years
of broad-based experience in health care as an
administrator, educator, clinician and consultant in acute
and long-term care settings and is skilled in creating and
applying strategies that assist health-care workers to learn
to build harmonious relationships at work. She plans and
presents educational programs on a facility, statewide and
regional basis. Active in the Ohio Nurses Association (ONA),
she is serving her 13th year on the Council of Practice. For
the last five years, she has been the chairwoman of the
council.
Continuing
education credit will be awarded to social workers,
counselors, nurses, long-term care administrators and
nursing assistants for attendance at the entire program.
CHEAO (OH-049) is approved as a provider of continuing
nursing education by ONA. BENHA has approved the program for
6.0 hours.
The
workshop is sponsored by Western Reserve Geriatric Education
Center, OU-COM's Area Health Education Center, Ohio
