Note: For more information, please contact Kevin Sanders, writer/editor, at (740) 593-0896.

ATHENS, Ohio -- Andrea Williams, long-term health-care administrator at Lindley Inn, and Rick Davis, executive vice president of Zandex Inc., will present the noontime seminar, "Assisted Living: Welcome Resource for Elderly," Monday, Oct. 18. Williams and Davis will discuss assisted living as a resource for the elderly as well as reviewing a range of issues that face the elderly who reside in assisted living facilities.

All health-care professionals are invited to the program. Lunch trays and brown bags are welcome. Physicians, social workers, counselors and nurses can receive one hour of continuing education credit for attendance. For more information, call the Geriatric Education Center at (740) 593-2258.

The event is part of Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine's (OU-COM's) fall 1999 continuing education series on geriatric medicine and gerontology, held on the first and third Mondays of each month from noon to 1 p.m. at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Room No. B-9. The seminar is co-sponsored by the Department of Geriatric Medicine/Gerontology, Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center, OU-COM's Area Health Education Center and the OU Counselor Education Program. Continuing education credit can be arranged for attendance at the program.

"The seminars are designed for an interdisciplinary audience," said Suzanne Croci, OU-COM geriatric education coordinator. "Health professionals from the community regularly attend, in addition to interns, residents and medical students. Members of the public are welcome as well, and the diversity of disciplines represented by the participants makes for an interesting exchange of ideas."

On Sept. 20, Jeff Palm, Ph.D., spoke on "Pharmacy Consideration in Long-Term Care." On Oct. 4, Ken Glinter, D.O., spoke on "Safety & Efficacy of HRT in the Post Menopausal Woman." On Nov. 1, Mike Kellogg, Ph.D., will present "Music Therapy and Medicine." Kurt Hoelrich, C.P.O., will speak on "Prosthetics and Orthotics in Geriatrics," Nov. 15. "Update on Cardiac Diagnostic Technology" will be presented by Randy Purdy, D.O., on Dec. 6.

Croci said the seminar series was started by a federal grant that established OU-COM as a contributing site to the Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center in September 1994. Provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, the grant supports educational programs in geriatrics and gerontology for physicians, nurses, social workers, counselors and other health-care providers to 22 Southeastern Ohio counties.
