ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio University Mortar Board Senior National Honor Society and Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity is sponsoring an American Red Cross blood drive on February 2 and 3 from 12 noon to 6 p.m. at the Ohio University Jefferson Hall Library on the East Green.

The blood drive is being organized in honor of Bryce Chesser, a 3-yr-old New Marshfield youth diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer, this past June.

Bryce, a patient of Dr. J. Phillip Jones, the Chair of the Pediatrics Department and Chief of the Medical staff at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, is being treated by oncologists at Children's Hospital in Columbus and has undergone chemotherapy, radiation and four surgeries -- including a stem cell transplant on December 7.

The son of Charles Chesser, Bryce requires transfusions of platelets twice weekly to help his blood clot. Bryce was released from the hospital on January 10 and will reside with his mother in Columbus to facilitate regular hospital check-ups.

"Bryce is groggy, but in good spirits and very happy to be home and not in the hospital," reports Mr. Chesser. His doctors say that he is doing well and his bone marrow has been free of cancer. Bryce continues to receive radiation therapy to eradicate cancer spots in his bones. Although blood cannot be donated directly to Bryce, blood donations help keep the local blood supply healthy for all patients who desperately need blood products to survive.

According to Lindsay Levenson, Ohio University Campus Blood Drive Coordinator and President of the Mortar Board Senior National Honor Society, the two-day blood drive is targeting students, faculty and staff with a goal of 170 pints. Appointments are required for this blood drive. Call the American Red Cross at 593-5273 or Lindsay Levenson at 589-7003 to make an appointment.

*The Gilham Frank VFW Auxiliary #8804 will sponsor a separate blood drive in honor of Bryce Chesser for the New Marshfield community on Saturday, March 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Waterloo Community Center, 3991 Old St. Route 56. To schedule an appointment, call 664-6132 or 664-4671.
