Residence Hall Computers a Big Hit with
Students
First-year
students arriving on Ohio Univesity's
Athens campus this weekend immediately
began using the personal computers they
found on the desks in their residence hall
rooms.
This
fall, Ohio University became the first
public university in Ohio to equip
freshman residence hall rooms with
personal computers. Next fall, all
residence hall rooms will be equipped with
a computer.
"We've
had a few small glitches, but other than
that, everything has gone surprisingly
well," said Christina Ooten, director of
auxiliary
information technology, who oversaw the
computer project. "On Labor Day, we had
more than 1000 users log on."
Over
the summer, 2,106 printers and computers,
equipped with state-of-the-art software
and a high-speed Internet access, were
installed in 23 freshman residence
halls.
The
computer initiative is aimed at improving
the learning environment for students, but
communication with parents back home may
also be enhanced.
"I've
already set up an e-mail account on
Hotmail," said Kara Hummel, a first-year
student from Canal Fulton, Ohio. "My
parents have already e-mailed me."
President
Robert Glidden announced the university's
plan to install computers in 23 freshman
residence halls at a May 18 news
conference.
