College
of Education Launches Lego Robotics
Workshop
Teachers
from across Ohio are participating in the
Jennings Professional Development Workshop
in Science, Mathematics and Robotics being
presented by the Ohio University
College
of
Education.
The
workshops, developed for fifth through
eighth grade teachers, are conducted in
two one-week courses (July 19-23 and July
26-30) and are being held in McCracken
Hall. A total of 48 teachers will learn to
use the Lego Robotics system and integrate
it into their everyday science and
mathematics curriculum. At the conclusion
of the workshop, teachers who have
successfully completed the training will
receive a Lego Dacta kit, valued at $700,
for use in their own classrooms.
Each
Lego Dacta kit can be reused and has the
capability of constructing 213 robots of
varying difficulty. Once students have
constructed a specific robot, they can
make the robot perform certain commands
using Lego language with a classroom
computer. Some of the robots that can be
designed using the Lego Dacta kit include
greenhouses, cars, conveyor belts, traffic
lights, data collection systems, and
robotic devices.
