AmeriCorps
Comes to the Ohio University
Campus
More
than 700 AmeriCorps members will meet on
Ohio University's Athens campus today
through Friday for their 1999 All Member
Gathering -- In-Service Training. This
fourth annual event carries the theme "One
Year in a Lifetime of Service" and brings
together all Ohio AmeriCorps members and
staff.
They
will participate in more than 40 workshops
on topics like team building, Internet
technology, Red Cross disaster response,
literacy, conflict management, diversity
training, grant writing, mobilizing youth
in community service, and volunteer
management.
Featured
speakers include Lt. Gov. Maureen
O'Connor, Harris Wofford of the
Corporation for National Service, and past
AmeriCorps volunteers.
This
is the fifth year of the AmeriCorps
program, which now involves more than
100,000 participants in more than 500
programs across the country. Ohio's
AmeriCorps program placed 1,000 workers in
80 Ohio community-based programs last year
to address needs in education, public
safety, human services, and the
environment.
In
exchange for one year of service, members
receive a small stipend and an educational
award that may be applied to outstanding
student loans.
