Ohio University Professor of English Dean McWilliams will speak on "Uncovering the Late Charles Chesnutt" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, in the Friends of the Libraries Room (Alden 319).

Charles W. Chesnutt of Cleveland was the first African American writer of fiction to be published and receive approval from the American literary establishment, according to McWilliams. His first book was published in 1899.

McWilliams will describe his discovery and editing of Chesnutt's unpublished novels and discuss their importance in understanding Chesnutt's career and his place in literary history. The lecture is free and open to the public.
