COLLEGE SPONSORS NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK

ATHENS,
Ohio -- The Russ College of Engineering and Technology at
Ohio University has announced that it will sponsor a special
program with area libraries as part of the 2000 National
Engineers Week Celebration. The Russ College will provide
posters and bookmarks to area public libraries as well as to
elementary and middle school libraries in Athens
County.
Other
local activities sponsored by the Russ College of
Engineering and Technology include:
- MATHCOUNTS:
The Ohio University Russ College of Engineering and
Technology-Hocking Valley Chapter of the OSPE (Ohio
Society of Professional Engineers) sponsors this local
competition in math for 7th-8th grade students. Students
who place can continue on to compete at state and
national levels. This year, more than 35,000 students
will compete in 500 local competitions. The Russ College
will host 9 area middle schools with approximately 64
students competing at the varsity and junior varsity
levels. The competition took place Sat., Feb. 19.
- TEAMS
(Tests for Engineering Aptitude in Math and Science).
The Russ College coordinates and sponsors the TEAMS
competition annually for this area This years high school
competition will take place on Tuesday, Feb 22 at Nelson
Commons. This year over 100 students from 19 area high
schools will participate.
- Engineering
and Technology Student for a Day, a visitation
program for 11th grade students. On Friday February 25,
high school juniors (4 per school) are invited to spend
the day with an OU Russ College student going to class,
attending labs, etc. The Student Council of the Russ
College sponsors this event through the Dean's
office.
National
Engineers Week will be celebrated February 20-26 throughout
the United States to increase public awareness and
appreciation of engineers and their work. The week is
scheduled around the same time as Presidents Day in order to
also honor George Washington who was considered the first
American Engineer.
