VERNON
ALDEN DISCUSSES HIS YEARS AS UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT IN NEW
BOOK
ATHENS,
Ohio -- Memories of Vernon R. Alden, Ohio University's 15th
president from 1962 to 1969, have been preserved in a new
book, "Vernon R. Alden: An Oral History," published by Ohio
University Libraries.
Edited by
Doug McCabe, curator of manuscripts for the libraries, the
book includes interviews conducted in late 1996 and early
1997 by a team of interviewers, including McCabe, professors
Alan Booth, Nicholas Dinos and Norman Parmer and Director of
Residence and Auxiliary Services Robert Hynes.
"The Alden
oral history is important because of the huge expansion at
the university during a time of great change in the nation
and the world," McCabe said. "Vernon Alden details his
successes and disappointments from the perspective of a
president with ambitious plans to take the university to
high levels of achievement. We also were able to include an
interview with the late Marion Alden whose activities as
first lady were quite progressive for the time."
The
436-page book includes 24 pages of photographs.
The oral
history follows two earlier library publications, "John C.
Baker: An Oral History," and "Speaking for Myself," Alden's
reflections on his career as an educator, corporate director
and entrepreneur.
The books
are available at local bookstores or by contacting Karen
Jones, Ohio University Libraries, 504 Alden Library, (740)
593-2710.
