CONFERENCE

ATHENS,
Ohio -- William Greider, national affairs editor for The
Nation magazine, will present the keynote address at
this weekend's John and Elizabeth Baker Peace Conference at
Ohio University.
Sponsored
by the university's Contemporary History Institute and John
and Elizabeth Baker Peace Studies Program**,
the conference runs Friday through Sunday (Feb. 11-13) on
the Athens campus. The conference, titled "Prospects for
Peace in the New Millennium: Lessons from the Twentieth
Century," is expected to draw 150 academics from across the
United States to discuss the state of the peace movement.
All events are free and open to the public.
"We have
just ended the bloodiest period in our history and it is
time to consider more peaceful methods for nations to relate
to one another," said Joan Hoff, director of the
Contemporary History Institute and conference organizer.
"This conference is designed to present that kind of
information."
Hoff said
this year's event -- the 17th annual -- would have pleased
Ohio University President Emeritus John Baker. Baker and his
wife, Elizabeth, established the endowment that funds the
annual conferences. Baker died in June at the age of 103.
"This is
the kind of legacy that he would have wanted," Hoff said.
"The Contemporary History Institute is very grateful to the
Baker family for making this type of conference possible."
Greider's
keynote address, "Global Capitalism in the 21st Century,"
will open the conference in the 1804 Room of Baker Center at
12:30 p.m. Friday. Former national affairs editor for
Rolling Stone magazine, Greider now holds that
position at The Nation. The weekly magazine, the
oldest in America and one of the country's most
well-regarded journals of opinion, was established by
abolitionists in 1865. It has a circulation of more than
102,000.
Other
speakers will address such topics as the United Nations,
NATO, human rights and women in the peace movement.
All events
are free and open to the public. For more information on
events, times and locations, call the Contemporary History
Institute at 593-4362 or check the conference's Web site at

**The
John and Elizabeth Baker Peace Studies Endowment at Ohio
University was established in 1982 by Dr. John C. Baker,
President of Ohio University from 1945 to 1962, and his
wife, Elizabeth, who devoted her life to artistic,
environmental, and global peace concerns. The Endowment is
administered through the Ohio University Contemporary
History Institute.
The Baker
Endowment seeks to encourage the education of students, as
well as the general public, in the means by which peace can
be established and maintained throughout the world. It
supports course development, student fellowships, visiting
speakers, scholarly research, and public conferences on
issues relating to peace, conflict resolution, environmental
issues, and new approaches to the study of international
relations.
