Contact: Michelle Wilson at 740-593-9341

ATHENS, Ohio -- Rick McIntosh, Director of the ABLE (Adult Basic Literacy Education) Resource Center has been chosen to represent the state of Ohio at the National Literacy Summit being held February 14-15 in Washington, DC. The ABLE Resource Center is located in and supported by the Ohio University College of Education.

The National Literacy Summit is being sponsored by the National Institute for Literacy, the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy, the Division of Adult Education and Literacy/U.S. Department of Education, the National Coalition for Literacy and the Consortium of State Directors of Adult Education. Representatives of various stakeholders were invited to participate in the National Literacy Summit including adult learners, adult literacy educators and tutors, family literacy practitioners, literacy volunteer professionals, libraries, policy makers and the media are among some of the participants.

The primary goal of the National Literacy Summit is to develop a future-oriented vision for literacy services in the United States that is ambitious, yet achievable. A second goal of the process is to communicate this vision to policy makers and opinion makers in the public and private sectors. The ultimate goal of the National Literacy Summit is to better meet the needs of Americans seeking to improve their literacy and basic skills. The major strategies for achieving these goals are to draft an action agenda, solicit feedback on the agenda from stakeholders and create consensus for the agenda.

The need for the National Literacy Summit stemmed from the National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) that found that over 40 million adult Americans lack the literacy skills necessary to succeed at work, at home and in the community. While over the past 10 years local communities, states and the nation have made some important steps forward in helping more adults improve their literacy skills, the need still exists for a coherent national policy and plan to expand the quality and quantity of learning opportunities.
