ATHENS, Ohio -- "Living in an Internet Society," an informal symposium to discuss the impact of online media on private life and education, will be held at Ohio University's Scripps Hall Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18 and 19. Keynote speaker Douglas S. Robertson, author of "The New Renaissance: Computers and the Next Level of Civilization," will speak at 7 p.m. Friday in Anderson Auditorium.

Following the speech, a response panel comprised of Ohio University President Robert Glidden, Ann Kovalchick, director of the Center for Innovation in Technology for Learning, and Thomas Carpenter, professor of classics and co-chair of the university's current review of the general education requirements, will discuss issues related to the Internet.

Saturday's schedule includes three sessions focused on lifestyle issues and the Internet, and two sessions on educational issues. The Saturday sessions will feature invited moderators and symposium panelists. Groups will be kept small to facilitate conversation and ideas.

"The symposium is not for technology enthusiasts, although they are welcome," said Professor of Journalism Patricia Westfall, organizer of the event. "It's for the rest of us who feel overwhelmed by the speed of change but who also feel we can't opt out."

Invited moderators for Saturday's sessions include Jennifer Gilbert, a reporter covering online issues for Advertising Age; Nathaniel Kennedy, associate editor for Kiplinger's Personal Finance; Margaret Dillon, a media historian; Hearing and Speech Professor C. Richard Dean; Professor of Journalism Robert Stewart and College of Osteopathic Medicine Faculty Development Director Dennis Baker.

The symposium is funded by Ohio University's 1804 fund and sponsored by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Alden Library and the Center for Teaching Excellence.

The event is free and open to the public. Advance registration by Feb. 11 is required. Registration forms are available at the reference desk in Alden library or at the symposium's web site http://www.ohiou.edu/lisconf/
