ATHENS, Ohio -- Twenty-five Ohio high school seniors and juniors are winners in the final round of Ohio University's 53rd annual American History Contest held on the Athens campus in December. Charles LaPlante, a student at Bishop Rosecrans High School in Zanesville, won first place in the statewide competition, winning a four-year, tuition scholarship to Ohio University and $100. More than 18,100 students at 350 Ohio high schools took the preliminary multiple-choice examination at their local schools in October.

The two-hour, final essay examination included questions on the early development of slavery in the American colonies; the growth of the women's rights movement in the pre-Civil War period; the development of the "imperial presidency" in the 20th century; and the nature of the civil rights movement. Students answered three of the four questions.

Second-place winner Alison Stanley, of Ledgemont High School, Thompson, received a one-year, $1,500 Ohio University scholarship and a $75 cash prize. Third- and fourth-place winners received $1,500 one-year scholarships and $65 and $60. The fifth-place winner received a $1,500 scholarship and $55.

Sixth- through twelfth-place winners received $1,250 scholarships and cash awards ranging from $50 to $25. Those placing 13th through 15th received $1,000 scholarships. Students placing sixteenth through 25th received certificates of superior achievement awards.

The Outstanding High School awards, based on a school's number of preliminary and final-round winners, were given to six high schools. The first place winners were Westerville North High School, large-school division; Hoover High School, North Canton, medium-school division; and Summit Country Day, Cincinnati, small-school division.

The second place winners were Walnut Hills, Cincinnati, large-school division; Lima and Moeller, medium-school division; and Bishop Rosecrans, Zanesville, small-school division.
