ACADEMY OF
SCIENCE ELECTS OHIO UNIVERSITY SCIENTISTS TO BOARD OF
TRUSTEES
ATHENS,
Ohio -- Two Ohio University scientists have been elected to
the Ohio Academy of Science's board of trustees. William
Hummon, emeritus professor of biological sciences, has been
named president and chairman of the board. Michele Morrone,
assistant professor of health sciences, has been selected as
an academia at-large board member.
The Ohio
Academy of Science is a nonprofit Columbus organization that
strives to stimulate interest in and disseminate knowledge
about science, promote quality scientific research and
collaborations, improve science instruction and recognize
scientific achievements. The academy sponsors a state
science day for students in grades 7 through 12, organizes
an annual research conference and publishes the Ohio Journal
of Science, an international, multi-disciplinary science
journal.
Hummon,
who has served as an Ohio University faculty member since
1969, is a zoologist who studies a small group of marine
animals called gastrotricha. As president and board chairman
of the Ohio Academy of Science, Hummon will help the
organization's executive officer oversee operations and
committees. He aims to forge stronger relationships with the
state legislature and state organizations that require
scientific expertise, such as the Ohio Department of Natural
Resources and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Hummon
has been a member of the academy since 1973. He begins his
new one-year post on April 1.
"As a
30-year member of both the Ohio University Department of
Biological Sciences and the Ohio Academy of Science, Dr.
Bill Hummon is well qualified to lead the academy into the
next millennium," said Anne Loucks, interim chair of the
Department of Biological Sciences.
"This
department, the College of Arts and Sciences and Ohio
University are proud that he has been chosen to pursue the
mission of the academy to foster curiosity, discovery and
innovation in Ohio."
Morrone,
who joined the Ohio University faculty in 1998, specializes
in environmental health sciences and environmental health
education. As board member of the Ohio Academy of Science,
her responsibilities will include advising the
organization's executive officer on the academy's programs
and priorities. Morrone has been a member of the academy for
four years and recently published two articles in the
organization's Ohio Journal of Science. Her membership on
the board began Dec. 1 and will run through 2002.
"Dr.
Michele Morrone has only been on our faculty in the School
of Health Sciences for a year, but she has already begun to
make her mark in the scientific community of Ohio," said
Paul Fitzgerald, director of the School of Health Sciences.
"We are all confident that Dr. Morrone's work with the Ohio
Academy of Science will have a significant and long-lasting
effect on both higher education and secondary education in
the state of Ohio."
Hummon
holds an appointment in the College of Arts and Sciences;
Morrone holds an appointment in the College of Health and
Human Services.
