KING DAY
CELEBRATION INCLUDES MARCH, NEW LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AND
LECTURE
ATHENS,
Ohio -- Activities in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
include a traditional march through campus, a kickoff of a
new minority student leadership program and a lecture by a
founding member of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Alpha Phi
Alpha fraternity will lead a silent march at noon Monday.
Marchers will start at the College Gate and walk toward
Galbreath Chapel, where keynote speaker William Nelson, a
research professor in the Department of African-American and
African Studies at Ohio State University, will speak on the
theme "Will We Continue the Dream?"
After the
event, participants can volunteer to take part in a
community service activity sponsored by the fraternity and
the Center for Community Service. Activities include
projects at Rural Action Development Corporation, ReUse
Industries and TEAM Athens County. Volunteers can sign up at
the Center for Community Service, 33 Baker Center, or at the
march.
In
conjunction with King Day, Ohio University's Office of
Multicultural Programs will launch the King/Chavez/Parks
Leadership Series, a program to help multicultural students
gain experience that prepares them for leadership
roles.
"My hope
is that more multicultural students will become involved in
campus leadership roles, not just in minority-based campus
organizations and activities but in all aspects of campus
life," said Office of Multicultural Programs Director Linda
Daniels.
Civil
rights attorney Morris Dees will speak on social justice and
education at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Templeton-Blackburn
Memorial Auditorium. As co-founder and chief trial counsel
for the Southern Poverty Law Center, Dees has won many
judgments against extremist organizations by persuading
juries to hold racist leaders accountable for their crimes.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
