SCIENTIST TO DELIVER LECTURE ON THYROID, AUTOIMMUNE
DISEASE

ATHENS,
Ohio -- Len Kohn, a scientist with the National Institutes
of Health, will deliver a lecture on the thyroid gland and
its role in the development of Graves' disease and other
autoimmune diseases from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10
in 106 Stocker Center. The lecture is free and open to the
public.
Kohn, an
internationally recognized scientist in the field of
metabolic diseases, is chief and medical director of the
cell regulation section of the metabolic diseases branch of
the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney
Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. The
researcher, who specializes in thyroid dysfunction, is
developing a cellular-based technique to diagnose Graves'
disease. He recently was awarded the American Thyroid
Association Distinguished Career award for his many research
contributions. He has published more than 350
articles.
Kohn's
lecture will cover the regulation of gene expression in
thyrocytes, and how it relates to the development of Graves'
disease and other autoimmune diseases and to
immunosuppressive therapy.

the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the
National Institutes of Health is one of the world's top
biomedical research centers. The agency conducts and
supports research that can help prevent, detect, diagnose
and treat disease and disability.

and the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
