ATHENS,
Ohio -- The "No Food, No Drink" rule at Alden Library on the
Athens campus of Ohio University is about to change. The
University Libraries will relax the "No drink" policy to
permit bottled water and other drinks in sturdy re-sealing
containers in Alden, beginning on January 3.
Spilled
drinks can do permanent damage to books and other library
materials and for that reason, the Library will only permit
substantial drink containers that can be tightly closed.
Paper cups and cartons, Styrofoam cups, plastic mugs with
sip holes that don't close, and soda cans will continue to
be prohibited.
"We are
liberalizing the policy because so many people carry and
prefer to drink bottled water," states Nancy Rue,
Coordinator of User Services. "But library users should
understand that many types of drink containers are still
not allowed in Alden. We remain very conscious of the
problems that spills cause to books, journals -- any paper
items -- and, of course, to computers."
Even the
newly "legal" drink containers are required to stay sealed
except when someone takes that refreshing sip. Library
users may not leave drinks open on study tables or carrels
within Alden. "'Lid it' is the key concept in the new
policy," comments Rue.
An exhibit
in Alden's fourth floor entrance lobby illustrates the types
of containers that are permitted for use in the library and
those that must remain outside the library or be taken to
the second floor snack area.
The "no
food" policy of the library remains unchanged. The
library's new policy statement is available at their Web
site at www.library.ohiou.edu/libinfo/depts/admin/intpol/index.htm.
