MICHAEL REAL NAMED DIRECTOR OF OHIO UNIVERSITY'S E. W. SCRIPPS SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM

ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University's College of Communication has named Michael R. Real director of the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism, effective July 1.

Real is a professor of telecommunications and film and director of the School of Communications at San Diego State University. He will replace Interim Director Dan Riffe.

"Michael Real brings a wealth of administrative experience to the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism, as well as a national scholarly reputation," said Kathy Krendl, dean of the College of Communication. "He will work effectively with the faculty to keep pace in a rapidly changing field of study."

Real completed a doctorate in communications at the University of Illinois, master's degrees in teaching and history at St. Thomas College, and a bachelor's degree in philosophy at St. Paul Seminary. Prior to joining the faculty at San Diego State University, Real served as campus chaplain and instructor of ethics and religion at the University of Illinois and as a professor of communication at the University of California at San Diego.

Real's research and teaching focus primarily on media, culture and social responsibility. He has written several books, including "Super Media: A Cultural Studies Approach" and "Exploring Media Culture: A Guide." Real has also written numerous articles and television and radio programs.

"I am flattered to be chosen to direct one of the most prestigious schools of journalism in the United States," Real said. "For many years I have seen from afar the excellent scholarship and education that comes from the College of Communication at Ohio University. Now I am pleased to become a part of that. The faculty uniquely combine professional experience, well-respected scholarship, and excellence in teaching. The world of journalism education faces many challenges today from new technologies, globalization, cultural diversity and more. I look forward to working with my new colleagues at Ohio U. to meet these challenges."

Ohio University's 75-year-old journalism school is ranked among the top 10 nationwide. As director, Real will be responsible for the curriculum, faculty and staff of the school's 800 undergraduate and 50 graduate students.
