OU-COM, Athens Join to Stamp Out Public
Health Threat
They
may be only about the size of a sesame
seed, but lice have raised quite a raucous
in Athens County elevating them to the
status of public enemy number 1. That's
because these small, brown wingless
insects have become true pests causing our
children to miss a large number of school
days and causing much grief to children,
parents, teachers, and agencies
alike.
Lice
have become so worrisome to the community
that they have sparked a countywide
consortium to pull together to break the
cycle of lice infestation in Athens
County. On December 1, the Athens County
Lice Project was launched to focus
intensive energy on ridding Athens County
of this pesky creature.
The
Athens County Lice Project, which has
three main components -- screening,
education and confidential case management
-- will be coordinated through the
OU-COM's Community Service Program (CSP)
and linked to the community through the
schools, agencies and local news media.
Five local school systems -- Alexander
Local, Athens City, Federal Hocking,
Nelsonville-York, and Trimble Local --
will participate involving pre-school,
kindergarten and elementary, and middle
school institutions. In addition,
Tri-County and JVS pre-school, and Kids on
Campus will also participate.
