PROJECT: Life Sciences Research Laboratory, West Green behind Stocker Center, Athens
ARCHITECT: Baxter, Hodell, Donnelly and Preston Inc. Architects, Cincinnati
BUDGET: $19.3 million
STATUS: To open fall 2001

DETAILS: 72,000 square feet of space to house researchers from Biological Sciences from the College of Arts and Sciences and the Basic Science Group in the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

PROJECT: Biochemistry Research Facility, near the College of Engineering's Multi-phase Research Facility, West State Street, Athens
ARCHITECT: Reiser, Valentour and Callahan Architects, Inc., Athens, working with Baxter, Hodell, Donnelly and Preston, Inc. of Cincinnati
BUDGET: $5.72 million, including a $1.4 million National Institutes of Health grant
STATUS: Projected opening early 2001

DETAILS: The 30,000-square-foot facility will significantly expand the university's research efforts and allow it to attract world-class chemists who will conduct life science research in state-of-the-art laboratories. Faculty research currently includes areas such as protein structure, genetic regulation and RNA structure. Projects will include studies of the effectiveness of drugs prescribed for hypertension, efforts to develop new types of antibiotics and the quest to decipher the genetic structure of plants. The building also will house Diagnostic Hybrids, Inc., a private firm spun off from the university's Innovation Center which develops, manufactures, and markets molecular diagnostic products for clinical and research use. The company collaborates with Ohio University and employs more than 20 people from the community, including student researchers.

PROJECT: Ohio University Child Development Center, The Ridges
ARCHITECT: Reiser, Valentour and Callahan, Athens
BUDGET: $2.25 million
STATUS: Masonry restoration could begin as early as next week; goal is to be completed and ready for business September 2000.

DETAILS: What was formerly the Athens Mental Health Center complex's Horse Barn, built in 1873, will be renovated into a 12,000-square-foot child care center that will serve about 130 children ages 6 weeks through 5 years. The new building will allow the center to double the number of children served. The center is also a learning laboratory for more than 600 university students a year. Children of faculty, staff, students and local residents will be eligible for child care at the center.

PROJECT: George V. Voinovich Center for Leadership and Public Affairs, The Ridges
ARCHITECT: Schooley, Caldwell Architects, Inc., Columbus
BUDGET: $2.5 million
STATUS: Projected opening mid-2001

DETAILS: Ridges cottage 21 will be renovated to house training and conference rooms and offices.

PROJECT: Institute for Local Government Administration and Rural Development, The Ridges
ARCHITECT: Feinknopf, Macioce, Schnappa Architects, Inc., Columbus, Ohio
BUDGET: $2.35 million
STATUS: Projected opening mid-2001

DETAILS: ILGARD will move from the Technology and Enterprise Building at The Ridges to Building No. 22 in the same area. Renovation of the 20,000-square-foot cottage will provide more space for offices, laboratories and training facilities. ILGARD provides applied research and technical assistance to state and regional government and development organizations, including the Central Appalachian Network and the Mayors Partnership for Progress. "This will give us more room for collaboration with community officials, state leaders and outside organizations," said Michael Finney, associate director for information technology and data services.

PROJECT: The Ridges Conference and Training Center
ARCHITECT: Robert S. Davis, Ltd., Powell
BUDGET: $4.4 million
STATUS: Projected opening mid-2001

DETAILS: Will renovate two floors of building 16 on the southeastern side of The Ridges and all of building 17, which was at one time the complex's chapel. The connecting areas will be transformed into a state-of-the art conference and training center, wired to deliver multimedia presentations, videoconferencing, and microwave hook-ups. The 20,000 square feet of space will provide meeting rooms, training and testing space, computer labs and conference rooms will be available "24-7," according to Vice President for Administration Gary North. In addition to university employee training, the center will be used to support activities held at the OU Inn and community-based conferences and workshops conducted by Lifelong Learning and Continuing Education.

PROJECT: Southern Campus Technology Center, Ironton

ARCHITECT: Levin, Porter Associates, Inc., Columbus
BUDGET: $6 million
STATUS: To open fall 2001
DETAILS: A 32,000 square-foot facility in which every classroom will be equipped with computer hookups, high-speed network access, and cutting-edge distance learning technology. In addition to making available additional workplace training and community education programs, the "smart classrooms" will focus on associate degree programs in law enforcement, science and technology, and health services.
