Memorial Service for John Calhoun
Baker
Ohio
University President Emeritus John Baker
served as the 14th president of Ohio
University from 1945 to 1961 and died
April 14, 1999.
There
will be a service commemorating Dr.
Baker's life and accomplishments this
afternoon at 4 p.m. in Galbreath Chapel.
It is an appropriate day to remember his
life and celebrate his legacy; today would
have been his 104th birthday.
"The
university community is deeply saddened by
the loss of John Baker," said Robert
Glidden, president
of Ohio University. "Dr. Baker was a
strong leader who led Ohio University
through a crucial period of growth. He
was, in a sense, the founder of the modern
Ohio University."
In
addition, a Calling Hour will be held in
Baker Center's 1804 Lounge this afternoon
from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Daughters Anne and
Betsy Baker and Eleanor Baker Steindler,
and granddaughter Catherine Steindler plan
to attend to accept greetings and
condolences. Everyone is invited to join
them in sharing memories of Dr.
Baker.
For
more information about Dr. Baker's life,
please read the related
release that was issued in
April.
These memorial events begin Ohio
University's 1999 Homecoming
Weekend.
