Martin Schwartz Elected Chair of the
Division on Critical
Criminology
Martin
D. Schwartz, professor of sociology and
chair of the department of sociology and
anthropology, has been elected chair of
the Division on Critical Criminology of
the American Society of Criminology for a
two-year term. The American Society of
Criminology is the main academic and
professional association in criminology
worldwide.
Schwartz
was named the 1999 Presidential Research
Scholar in social and behavioral science.
The division fosters research and theory
development in the field of critical
criminology and provides a forum for
members of the ASC to discuss ideas and
exchange information.
"We
are concerned with the fact that, with a
crime rate that is not much higher than
many other countries, the United States
leads the world by far in imprisonment
rates," said Schwartz.
