OHIO
UNIVERSITY AWARDED INAUGURAL GRANTS FROM THE OHIO LEARNING
NETWORK
ATHENS,
Ohio -- Ohio University has been awarded two of three
inaugural grants from the Ohio Learning Network's
Innovations in Teaching and Learning Program.
The OLN
governing board approved a grant of
$99,000 to create a collaborative virtual reality design
studio, according to Ohio University Associate Provost for
Information Technology Doug Mann.
David
Matthews, assistant professor in the School of
Human
and Consumer Sciences,
is directing a project that will link Ohio University
students and professional designers to work on architectural
and interior design projects using real-time,
three-dimensional design software on the World Wide
Web.
A second
grant of $119,000 to develop an interactive distance
learning course that can be delivered to students' homes
through the Internet was awarded to Larry Tumblin, assistant
director of the Learning Advancement Center on the
Zanesville
campus.
The course on current international issues, taught by
Professor of Political
Science
James Jordan, will include video conferencing between
students at their homes and Jordan. As part of the course,
students will be provided with high-speed Internet
connections and laptop computers.
The Ohio
Learning Network, a consortium of 55 public and private
colleges in Ohio, was created this year to expand access to
learning opportunities by enhancing the capacity and
effectiveness of colleges and universities to employ
technology in instruction and research.
