ATHENS,
Ohio -- The first wave of Gateway computers were installed
in Ohio University freshman residence halls the week of
August 2.
More than
500 computers and 1,000 Okidata laser jet printers arrived
on the Athens campus the morning of Aug. 2. Shortly after, student
workers transported the first 57 PC-filled cow boxes to
Lincoln Hall, an all-male residence hall on East
Green.
As
computers and printers are delivered to residence halls,
technicians from Communication
Network Services
follow behind for hook up and software installation.
"By the end of this week, nine of the 23 freshman residence
halls will have computers and printers installed," said
Gordon Pettey, assistant to the director of residence
and campus auxiliary
services.
"Over the next three weeks, additional computers and
printers will arrive at specified intervals to be installed
in the remaining residence halls."
If all
goes according to schedule, Pettey says he expects
installation to be complete by August 27.
Ohio
University is the first state-supported university in Ohio
to provide first-year students with computers in their
rooms.
