GENO FORD PROMOTED TO ASST. MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH

ATHENS, Ohio -- Geno Ford promoted to assistant coach Ohio University men's basketball head coach Larry Hunter has announced the promotion of Geno Ford to assistant men's basketball coach.

Ford served as graduate assistant coach for the Bobcats last year after starring at guard from 1993-97.

"I am very excited about Geno and the many positive qualities he brings to our program as a coach," said Hunter. "He is a proven winner as an athlete and a person. He has that rare ability to generate great focus and sustained enthusiasm at whatever task he is involved with to produce superior results.

"It was not a difficult decision to elevate Geno to a full-time position. He is a dynamic young coach with tremendous knowledge and experience for his age. Geno has national name recognition which will help in recruiting and he has done a tremendous job coaching in our program the past year."

Ford played for Coach Hunter from 1993 to 1997, ending his career as the fourth-leading scorer in Bobcat history with 1,752 points. As a senior, Ford was an All-MAC selection and averaged a team-high 18.7 points, 1.7 steals and 2.8 assists. He earned second-team All-MAC honors as a junior and was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team in 1993-94 when he helped the Bobcats to the MAC regular season and tournament titles.

He played professional basketball for the Leiceister Riders in England during the 1997-98 season, earning the team's MVP award. Ford returned to Ohio last year to pursue a collegiate coaching career and a master's degree in athletic administration.

"I am excited about the opportunity to remain part of our program at Ohio," explained Ford. "I feel that working with Coach Hunter at a place I know very well and care a great deal about is the perfect scenario for me as a young coach."

Ford, 24, graduated cum laude from Ohio in 1997 with a degree in interpersonal communication before earning his master's degree in June 1999. He and his wife Traci have a four-year-old son Darin.

Hunter's 1999-2000 staff is now complete with alumni Ford and John Rhodes as assistant coaches and Bill Fournier serving as graduate assistant coach.
