SAFER 1998 HALLOWEEN PROMPTS CONTINUATION OF CAMPUS SECURITY MEASURES

ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio University will restrict visitors to campus residence halls and parking on campus Halloween weekend, October 29-30.

Students living in residence halls will be allowed one pre-registered guest for the weekend. Wristbands will be used to identify guests and hall residents for easy access to buildings. Parking on campus will be limited to students with parking tags.

The policy follows a successful 1998 campaign that reduced vandalism and provided a safer environment than previous years, according to Mike Sostarich, interim vice president for Student Affairs.

Sostarich met with representatives of the Student Senate's Committee on Halloween and the offices of Vice President for Administration, Campus Safety, Residence Life, Dean of Students and Environmental Health and Safety before deciding to continue the policy this Halloween weekend.

"We continue to believe that our greatest challenge comes in coping with the tremendous influx of out-of-town guests and last year's effort indicates we are succeeding in reducing vandalism and providing a safe atmosphere," Sostarich said. "We are always concerned for the well-being of our students. Taking these precautions continues to make good sense. We were especially pleased by the spirit of cooperation from our students last year and anticipate a similar response later this month."
