OHIO
UNIVERSITY PREPARED FOR CITY'S ANNUAL HALLOWEEN
WEEKEND
ATHENS,
Ohio -- Ohio University will continue its efforts to provide
a safe environment for its students during Athens city's
annual Halloween event. Restrictions on visitors to campus
residence halls, parking on campus and wristbands for easy
identification are all planned for the Oct. 29 weekend. A
successful campaign to reduce vandalism and provide a safer
environment in 1998 prompted the continuation of the
measures, said Mike Sostarich, interim vice president for
student
affairs.
"We
continue to believe that our greatest challenge comes in
coping with the tremendous influx of out-of-town guests and
last year's effort indicates we are succeeding in reducing
vandalism and providing a safe atmosphere at the same time,"
Sostarich said.
The
Halloween event is well known throughout the region and many
visitors arrive in Athens to celebrate. Ohio University is
taking prudent action to assure security of its students and
grounds and continues to make significant efforts to educate
its campus community on the dangers of alcohol abuse.
"Halloween
has become something of a tradition in Athens and while the
focal point can too often be alcohol consumption by our
students, we are resolved to intensify our efforts to
promote personal responsibility and accountability," said
Ohio University President Robert Glidden. "Our PATH program
is designed to encourage personal accountability, trust and
honor and is making progress in raising awareness of
consequences for one's actions. I am confident our students
will make wise and appropriate choices during that
weekend."
