OHIO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF EDUCATION HOSTS ANNUAL IDE CONFERENCE

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio University College of Education is hosting the annual Institute for Democracy in Education (IDE) Conference October 1-2, 1999 in McCracken Hall. The conference, "Critical Literacy for Democracy," is open to the public and the conference costs are as follows: $25.00 for IDE members, $35.00 for non-IDE members, $15.00 for full-time students, or the conference can be taken for Ohio University credit. Registration information can be obtained from Jaylynne Hutchinson, Director of the IDE Main Office, at (740) 593-9827 or through e-mail at democracy@ohiou.edu.

The conference deals with issues of "literacy" understood broadly. All of the sessions at the conference are interactive, dialogue-based workshops. Workshop topics represent exciting and effective educational practices and will address many different issues and therefore will have something for everyone including kindergarten-grade 12 teachers, students, community activists, environmentalists and university professors.

"In a time when educational issues are so critical to the many groups vying for the opportunity to try to reform our schools, we feel we have assembled an impressive and diverse group of people to offer a variety of interactive dialogue-based workshops," said Jaylynne Hutchinson, Director of the IDE Main Office.

Some of the workshop topics include:

  • Literacy for Women
  • Media Literacy and our Children & Schools
  • Ecological Literacy and schools
  • Forging Community Connections with schools
  • Violence in our Schools...whose left out and why?
  • The Democratic High School
  • Teaching Democratically at the University Level
  • Parents Against Proficiency Testing
  • Teaching Against the Grain
  • How to Address the Tough Social Issues in a Literacy Classroom
  • Student Free Press for High School Students
  • Local Oral Appalachian History -- How to Make it Come Alive
  • Novelists and Poets in our Classrooms
  • Using Primary Historical Sources to Build Empathy in Classrooms
  • Diversity -- Developing Gay/Straight Student Alliances

The Institute for Democracy in Education, housed in the Ohio University College of Education, is dedicated to helping schools find ways that prepare their students to develop democratic habits of heart and mind, so they can become true participating democratic citizens in our communities. IDE began in Athens in 1985 as a grassroots organization of local teachers who wanted to have a greater voice in the decisions about how to educate students in meaningful ways.

PLEASE NOTE: Jaylynne Hutchinson, Director of the IDE Main Office, is available for interviews and can be reached at (740) 593-9827 or democracy@ohio.edu for more information and a schedule of events.
