UNIVERSITY SCORES HIGH IN THE SPORTING NEWS REVIEW OF
ATHLETICS PROGRAMS
ATHENS,
Ohio (Sept. 8, 1999) -- Ohio University's intercollegiate
athletics program is rated ninth in the nation for fairness
and 13th in graduation rates in The Sporting News
magazine's Sept. 8 review of the 112 institutions that
competed in Division I-A football and Division I basketball
in 1998-99.
Ohio was
ranked 48th overall in the review, which considered four
categories in the analysis -- "Do we win?" "Do we graduate?"
"Do we rock?" "Do we play fair?"
Ohio's
ninth-place finish in "Do We Play Fair?" category was based
on how many teams each school sponsors and the success of
those teams, the graduation rate for all athletes and the
extent to which schools are complying with Title IX and NCAA
probation regulations.
The
13th-place ranking in the "Do We Graduate?" category was
based on how the universities and colleges ranked over the
last four years in academics, including grade-point-averages
and SAT scores for entering freshmen and the latest NCAA
graduation rate statistics for football and basketball
programs.
