The 40th Anniversary of the Department of African American Studies

Fall Quarter 2009
October 20-Re-Membering African American Studies at Ohio University
Dr Akil Houston will be presenting on the topic: "Re-Membering African American Studies at Ohio University," focusing on a film he is doing about the department's history.
Time: 2-3 pm
Place: Friends of the Libraries Room (Alden 319)

Dr. Akil Houston is an Assistant Professor in the African-American Studies Department at Ohio University specializing in Film and Media studies. Dr. Houston is a filmmaker, poet, professional DJ, and hiphop activist.

November 5Prisons and Democracy: Dr. Angela Davis, an activist, author and professor presents a lecture on "Prisons and Democracy on Thursday November 5, 2009 at 7:00 pm at Templeton Blackburn Memorial Auditorium.

November 10-Freedom Denied
Déanda Johnson will be presenting on the topic:"Freedom Denied: African American Prison Literature and Other Stories of Confinement."
Time: 3-4 pm
Place: Friends of the Libraries Room (Alden 319)

Déanda Johnson is the Coordinator of the African American Research and Service Institute and a Visiting Instructor in the Department of African American Studies at Ohio University.
