African American Presence In Ohio River Valley Oral History Project
Beginning in 2000, the Department of African American Studies and the Multicultural Genealogical Center of Chesterhill, OH entered into conversations about the historical silences that surround how African Americans (people of African descent) have shaped and continue to shape the social, cultural, and economic landscape of this region, all the while struggling against racial oppression and social injustice. To end these historical silences, in 2004 the Department of African American Studies and the Department of Social Work collaboratively launched "The African American Presence in the Ohio River Valley Oral History Project." The project is a large-scale, long-term research project designed to document the historic and current presence of African Americans and multi-ethnic communities in the rural regions of the Ohio River Valley.

The oral history project is a collaborative effort in which Ohio University's faculty, staff, and student body, and community-based co-researchers assist communities in the areas surrounding the University's regional campuses in the remembering, telling, recording, and preserving of the African American presence and experience in this region. It is our hope that these stories will offer valuable insights into the historical significance of the realities of African American daily life in the Ohio River Valley.

This project is being funded by an internal grant from Ohio University. In addition, the project has also received funding from the federal government through Wayne National Forest to collect data on two pre-Civil War communities involved in the Underground Railroad, Pokepatch and Payne's Crossing, now located in the Wayne National Forest.
