Dr.Gilkes (B.A.University of London, 1967.Ph.D ( English and American Literature ) University of Kent at Canterbury, 1973.) served as a William J. Quillian visiting professor of Randolph - Macon Woman’s College, Lynchburg Virginia, between August 2000 - July 2001 where he taught courses in Caribbean Literature and culture to students and staff. Prior to that appointment he served as a Tertiary Education Specialist & consultant to the O.E.C.S. Based in Castries, St. Lucia @ the OERU (OECS Education Reform Unit).He has also taught courses at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, St. Lucia, University of Guyana and U.W.I., Barbados. In addition, Dr.Gilkes served as Reader in Caribbean Literature and Head, Dept. of English, U.W.I., Cave Hill campus, Barbados for three years.
