
Session Descriptions
Student-leaders engaged in local and national efforts will discuss the ways in which the sustainability movement can be built and advanced from the ground up.
Invincible will screen and discuss the hybrid music video/documentary Locusts (2008, 11:27 min) directed by Iqaa the Olivetone and featuring Finale which addresses the physical displacement/gentrification happening in her home city of Detroit and the importance of sustainable community led development while preserving the legacy of our cities. She will lead a participatory discussion about local organizing strategies and generating ideas to bring new people and energy into the local anti-displacement projects.
The Affrilachian Poets will lead a Creative Writing crash course on writing poetry focusing on getting the words from the pen to the page utilizing the basic elements of the line, the music, the image and density.
The Affrilachian Poets will lead a Performance crash course focusing on taking the words from the page to the stage by using your voice, face and body as instruments.
Majora Carter will participate in an "exchange of ideas" discussion. Using her keynote address as a point of departure, participants will come up with innovative ways to address the economic and environmental challenges that impact their communities.
The Affrilachian Poets will peform their own works. The featured poets are Mitchell Douglas, Ricardo Nazario y Colon, Bianca Spriggs-Floyd, and Frank X Walker.
