Beyond Confinement Research & Creative Activity Prizes(View Poster)
In recognition of the 40th Anniversaries of the Department of African American Studies and Alden Library, the Department of African American Studies 40th Anniversary Committee is pleased to announce one undergraduate and one graduate cash prize for scholarship which focuses on the U.S. prison system and issues related to the criminal justice system. The Beyond Confinement prizes are open to Ohio University students (on the main and regional campuses) only. Possible topics include: medical care and mental health in prison; labor practices and prisons; sexual violence in prison; prisoner rights; prison literature and art; prison activism, rehabilitation and recidivism; race, class, gender and incarceration; anti-prison movements.
The committee welcomes submissions from a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to the social sciences, humanities, fine arts, medicine, business, and law.
Application Procedure
Applications must include the following:
• Application cover sheet/letter
• A letter of support from at least one Ohio University faculty member
• A draft or final version of the research project that can be presented in a variety of formats including written (not to exceed 35 pages, word processed, double spaced), web-based, film, musical score or visual art media.
• A bibliography
Selection/Review Criteria
The Committee will consider the following in the awarding of prizes:
• Sophistication and originality of research
• Use of Ohio University library resources
• Completeness and quality of research
• Significance of research or creative activity in the study of incarceration
