Graduate Certificate in Sustainability

The purpose of the graduate Certificate in Environmental Sustainability is to provide students with the necessary multidisciplinary skills and global awareness needed to understand the broader impacts of personal consumer choices on the environment. The specific objectives include:

1. Exposing graduate students from many disciplines to the economic, societal,     and environmental effects of consumer choice;
2. Enhancing the graduate degree of the student by incorporating
    problem-solving and critical thinking skills into the certificate program;
3. Improving student understanding of basic concepts of sustainability as they     relate to their degree program; and
4. Providing opportunities for working professionals (i.e. teachers and business     leaders) to enhance the professional careers.

The basis of the certificate program is to address a comprehensive study of environmental sustainability including the four areas of: 1) economy, 2) society, 3) environment and 4) technology. Students will be required to take 5 classes to complete the certificate; the total number of credit hours for the certificate will be 16-20. To accomplish this, the certificate curriculum will use a combination of existing and new courses.

Two new courses will be created: 1) Concepts in Environmental Sustainability and Leadership and 2) Sustainability Problem Solving; these courses will be required by all students completing the certificate.

Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies Certificate

The undergraduate Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies Certificate, offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, supplements existing majors with an interdisciplinary study of the biophysical environment and the complex interactions between humans, other organisms, and the environment. The program is open to students in any major, but it is especially relevant for educators and those seeking environmentally related careers in government, business, law, and consulting firms.

Master of Science in Environmental Studies

The Master of Science in environmental studies is an interdisciplinary program of graduate coursework and research. Created in 1970, the program meets the needs of students looking for a broader academic experience than a traditional course of study can provide. The program gives students the flexibility to pursue coursework and research spanning several disciplines. Students' backgrounds run the gamut from business, humanities, and social sciences to physical and biological sciences and engineering. All share a high level of professional motivation and concern for the future of our environment.

Ohio Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Studies

Global warming, overharvesting and biodiversity loss are top environmental concerns these days, which has heightened the need for college graduates with expertise in those issues. Ohio University meets the demand with its Ohio Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Studies, which builds on an already successful biological sciences program that’s one of the biggest in the state.
